It’s probably fair to say that side bets are the fool’s gold of the live tables. At first glance they look great, with nice big juicy payouts. But on closer inspection there’s really not a lot of value there. Almost without exception, you’ll find the house edge on these bets substantially higher than the table’s main bet.

They must be popular with the punters though because the list of side bet options continues to expand at all the big platforms.

Playtech’s new Egalite side bet on baccarat tables is the latest and (perhaps not so) greatest example.

Never hurts to give it a try though so I had a little Egalite flutter at bet365, concentrating on the high payout low value ties.

Perhaps I need to rethink my avoid policy to avoid side bets?
