Triple Deuce to eclipse Eclipse

Since launching in 2009 super yacht Eclipse has been top dog on the high seas; 164 metres of no-expense-spared opulence.

It’s no longer the longest. That title is now held by Azzam which was launched in 2013 and measures 180m in length (owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Emir of Abu Dhabi).

But Roman Abramovich’s big toy is still generally considered to be the most expensive super yacht ever built with a price estimated to be close to $1 billion, and while maybe not as good as longest, most expensive is still something to hang your ushanka-hat on.

However, it is in danger of being knocked off this perch as well.

Estimated cost of world’s most expensive super yachts

Currently on the drawing boards, and planned for launch in 2018 is a boat named (well named I might add) Triple Deuce. As the name suggests, it will be 222m long, dwarfing the current drop of mega yachts. It will also become the most expensive yacht ever built with a price tag supposedly somewhere between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion.

Then there’s Admiral X Force 145. Not a big boat at a mere 145m, but another that will cost over $1 billion to complete.

Pretty soon Eclipse will no longer be the super yacht. It will just be another one of the super yacht crowd.

tripledeaceThe (currently unknown) billionaire who commissioned Triple Deuce doesn’t want his boat to suffer the same fate too soon.

222m isn’t a practical length. It won’t even fit inside many of the world’s super yacht ports. But it’s a length that will not be surpassed in a hurry. At least this is what brokers of the build, 4Yacht are saying.

“By building the yacht to 222 meters (728 feet), the owner wants to make it difficult, if not impossible, to be ‘eclipsed’ himself”, says Craig Timm from 4Yacht.

Paul Allen was probably told something similar when he had his 126m long Octopus built. When launched in 2003 it was the king of the high seas length wise. Today it doesn’t make the top 10 list.
