Well we’ve got one that’s every bit as good as anything you’ll find for sale on the Internet.

It’s called the Octopus Roulette System.

All you need is:

an aquarium containing 2 boxes – one labeled red the other black; and

an octopus. Preferably one with proven oracle abilities.

The rest is easy. Although you will have to play online because getting your octopus past security and onto the gaming floor of a traditional casino may be difficult.

And good luck. Not that you’ll need it!

Browsing a popular roulette forum this morning a thread caught my attention - initially because the topic involved one of the casinos listed at Livedealer.org, but then also because it had developed into 15+ page and 150+ comment monster.

As a general rule, I pay scant regard to any forum posts claiming a new system or bias has been identified. I view roulette systems and the salespeople behind them a with very, very healthy dose of skepticism. But the interest this post had provoked got me curious.

Exploitable bias at a live roulette table?

A self-proclaimed roulette expert swore black and blue that through a number of years dedicated play at Dublinbet he had identified clear spin patterns on a particular wheel. The wheel in question can be found on Dublinbet’s “roulette table 1″, which basically means it can be found of any of the Vuetec powered casinos taking play from that particular table within the Fitzwilliam Card Club, including Lucky Live Casino.

Apparently the patterns were readily identifiable by certain triggers that signaled both the start and end of the pattern. If you new the triggers and associated pattern – bingo! Money to be made.

The underlying inference being made was that a significant roulette wheel bias had been identified as well as the means to exploit it. Like I said above, normally with a claim like this I’d yawn and move on. But plenty of other seasoned roulette players were biting and the initial post was full of enthusiasm with no sales pitch so I figured there may just be something in this so I read on.

The system continues to bear fruit and interest brews

The next 100 or so posts, covering a period of a month or so were dominated by the thread-starter and contained all kinds of details of his daily sessions at Dublinbet using his system of flat betting to the wheel’s bias. Most sessions were successful. Certainly long term yield was tracking positively. Yield stats, number sequences, screen shots of opening and closing balance amounts and all sorts of random analysis was furnished with monotonous regularity. Again, no sales pitch – just palpable excitement.

Of course I was wondering why he was spending so much time reporting on how very well his system was working rather than simply using it to more money. But then maybe he’s just a lot more generous than I would be with a discovery like that.

A few other forum members started to chime in with their beliefs that the Fitzwilliam wheels may not be truly random. Talk of magnets and a rigged wheel even gathered steam. “I do OK playing on paper but have trouble when I make real bets. Something is not right there” said one. Presumably he thought there was a conspiracy against him that included the hundreds of other players playing that table and betting differently at the same time.

Surprise surprise…the sell comes

A little over a month, 100 or so posts and thousands of passionate words since the initial post comes that inevitable sales pitch, buried deep inside yet another report of a winning session…”how much would you pay for a tutorial that learns you how to double your bank in 2-3 days at each deposit?”

Then comes the asking price…€5,ooo.

Nobody sells a winning system

The classic response from one forum member, who stole words I was shouting at the computer screen…

“Nobody sells a winning system.” Which is perfectly logical. Why get rid of the goose that can lay you golden eggs? You’d have to be an idiot.

So, just to be very clear there is NOT an exploitable wheel bias at Dublinet. There is nothing remotely suspicious going on with the wheels at Dublinbet. The art of the roulette system con is however alive and well. And the lengths some of these salespeople will go to for a sale knows no bounds.

———————————————————————————————————–

I was completely stunned. Nineteen years of casino gambling research had finally paid-off. I discovered a flaw in the game of roulette. This finding produced an exciting opportunity to exploit the layout and give the player a mind-blowing advantage over the casino.”

I just love roulette systems. I love reading the websites that sell them. I love the stories they tell. I love the promises they make.

I suspect I would enjoy having a beer and a chat with the salesmen behind them.

Don’t get me wrong, my fondness has nothing to do with their effectiveness in beating the game of roulette. In truth I think I have a better chance of finally receiving $20 million from that nice man from Nigeria who keeps emailing me about a surprise inheritance than getting any of these systems to work.

But they are so very entertaining to read.

Now I’m not talking about the old school systems here – Labouchere, Le piquemouche, Martingale, d’alembert etc. These have been around for decades. I’m talking about the new, exciting, breakthrough, secret, just discovered systems that are advertised for sale all over the Internet. There are thousands of them and they are all worth a read.

But just in case you don’t have a spare couple of months, here are a few of our favorites…

Power Roulette –
They say: “THE BEST KEPT SECRET GET PAID TO GAMBLE”
We think: It’s not such a well kept secret if you’re promoting it on a website

Secret Roulette -
They say: “The secret roulette system – The casinos tried to ban!!!!”
We want to know: which casinos????

My Roulette System -
They say: “LEARN THE SYSTEM – USE THE STRATEGY – WIN THE MONEY!”
We wonder: why you are shouting?

Genuine winner -
They say: “Beat roulette consistently with a scientifically proven roulette system that has literally won millions”
We ask: so why all the effort trying to sell it? Wouldn’t your time be better spent using it to make more millions?

Roulette sniper -
They say: “25 Year Old High School Drop-Out *SHOCKS* The Online Casinos Into A Spiraling Daze As He Bleeds Them Dry For Cash Day and Night Using Roulette Sniper Version 2.0″
We suspect: judging by the punctuation used, the same high school drop-out wrote your tag-line

Beat Roulette -
They say: “A device that has literally, secretly won millions in real casinos”
We wonder: if literally winning millions better than just winning millions

Wayne’s Roulette System -
They say: “FORGET ROULETTE SOFTWARE! DISCOVER THE REAL SECRETS TO TOTAL DOMINATION OF ANY ONLINE ROULETTE CASINO AND CASH-IN DAY AFTER DAY LIKE CLOCKWORK”
We say: Again, why shout?

Reverse Roulette -
They say: “The FIRST and ONLY Roulette System To Overcome The House Edge, and Flip The Casino Odds in YOUR Favor…”
We say: first and only…I don’t know – Wayne’s system sounded pretty good

Roulette Secret Revealed -
They say: “The casinos still think they are safe…but read on…”
We want to know: did anyone read on, and if so which casinos went bankrupt?

Roulette System X -
They say: “Guaranteed Daily Income Travelling The World Playing Roulette”
We want: to read the fine print on that guarantee

World’s Best Roulette -
They say: “Simply the Best Roulette System in the World”
We say: that doesn’t mean it works

The Roulette System -
They say: “Learn How To Pull The Wool Over The Eyes Of 19 Casino Bosses And Cash In £30,339 In Just One Month With this Unique Roulette System…”
We just worry: we’ll be playing against a casino boss other than the 19 you’ve got covered

Roulette Assault -
They say: “Attention All Cash Hungry Roulette Players”

Online Roulette Flaw -
They say: “Find out why casinos want to ban this website”
We were wondering: if they were the same casinos you are affiliated with on your website?

They say: ‘Now Revealed – Roulette System Secrets the Casinos Don’t Want You to Know’
We suspect: the casinos aren’t too concerned if you know

Fool Proof Roulette -
They say: “You are about to become what is known in the casino industry as an advantage player”
We say: from a fool to an advantage player in minutes – sounds plausible

Roulette Xtreme -
They say: “for the serious roulette player at every level”
We say: do you mean seriously stupid or seriously gullible?

Ultimate Online Roulette System -
They say: “Advanced Winning Techniques for the Tax Conscious Casino Gambling Investor”
We think: you’re going too niche with your target market guys

The Triad System -
They say: “In its present format, roulette is an unbeatable game. The house advantage is 5.26. The TRIAD has changed that!”

I have a friend who is an avid gambler and who subscribes to a bunch of casino magazines.

He told me the other day about an article in one of his magazines that detailed how a baccarat dealer somewhere in an American casino had dealt 27 consecutive wins to the Player hand. Amazed at the probability of such an event I asked him to show me the article, which he happily agreed to do.

That was 3 weeks ago, and for one reason or another he has yet to produce the goods, but swears black and blue that this did in fact happen, 27 IS the number, and it is all recorded in print in a very reputable industry periodical.

If and when said magazine is furnished, I’ll do a follow-up piece and fill in the who’s, when’s, where’s and which source, but for the time being have to to be a little scant in this regard so apologies in advance.

Anyway, proceeding on the basis that somewhere in a reputable casino such a streak did in fact happen, I just wanted to ponder the astronomical odds of such an occurrence, as well as the obvious implications for certain systems out there that are touted as sure things.

What are the odds?

Let me just preface the following analysis with the caveat that I’m no game mathematician or maths genius and I’ll be applying what I learned 15 years ago in sixth form permutations and combinations class. Mrs Arnott was a great teacher though and I aced probability, so I’m pretty confident I’ve got a good handle on it.

So the odds of the ‘Player’ winning a distinct deal (according to the wizard of odds) is 0.446427. The odds of the Player winning 2 hands in a row is the simple permutation ‘Player win AND Player win’, expressed mathematically as: -

0.446427 x 0.446427 = 0.1984.

The odds of the Player winning 3 hands in a row is simply 0.1984 x 0.446427 (or 0.446427 to the power 3) = 0.089

You get the idea right? So the odds of 27 Player wins in a row is 0.446427 to the power of 27, or an incomprehensibly minuscule 1 chance in 2,862,449,084.

Let’s just call it 1 in 3 billion.

I think the odds of winning most standard lotteries is around the 1 in 3 million mark. So to put this streak into perspective, it’s 1000 time more remote than winning a lottery. Conversely, your chances of winning the lottery are a thousand times better than ever witnessing such a streak.

Streaks do happen

The other sobering lesson to take from this, is that enormous streaks happen. This one is a once in a lifer, but I’m sure a dozen or so consecutive hands has happened quite often. In roulette terms, black or red winning streaks are common and have led to the undoing of many a faithful Martingale player. Imagine starting with a $5 bet and doubling up each bet. Let’s assume there’s no table limit, and you come up against a losing streak of 12 in a row. Your 13th bet, which will put to $5 up if you win, will be $20,480.

In the very unlikely event that you hit a losing streak of 27 consecutive bets, your 28th will need to be just over $671 million dollars to put you $5 up.

Still want to play Martingale?

There seem to be more systems devised for the game of roulette than all other casino games combined, which is interesting. I say it’s interesting because it has been proven time and time again through the application of sound and irrefutable mathematics, that a game of roulette in which no wheel bias (or known section spinning) exists, has a clear house edge on each spin, and each spin is an independent event.

Sure you can get lucky and win. But a system is something that is supposed to give the user a long term house edge. And unfortunately such a thing does not exist in the game of roulette.

The Martingale, The Fibonaci, La Bouchere, D’Alembert, The Barbi, The Double Zero Barbi, The Power System, The Money Maker, Roulette Assault…they come with all sorts of impressive names and attached claims. Generally you will find them advertised for sale on websites that start something like this…

“Tired of losing cash playing roulette? Tired of bogus roulette systems and software packages? Beginning to think roulette is rigged and impossible to beat?

Well look no further because we’ve got the only system guaranteed to let you beat the casino playing roulette.

[insert many testimonials from extremely happy system users]

For the one off price of only $49.95 this system could be be yours…

Whenever I come across another one of these sites I can’t help but think that if the system being sold really did work, why is this person spending so much time and effort trying to sell it, when they could be at the casino using it to rake in fists full of cash? The answer of course, is that the any money raised from the sales is going to be more than the system will ever make employed against the roulette wheel.

I don’t want to rain on the parade here. But if you’re going to gamble, as I do, it’s best always to deal with cold calculated reality rather than fallacy. And here’s the reality. You can win playing roulette. But given every bet has a small house edge attached, winning consistently over a long term, even for the luckiest of gamblers is unlikely. And no system is going to change this.
