Live dealers and high rollers

Setting the scene
Just imagine for a moment that you are a high roller, sitting at your
mahogany desk in your top floor, CEO corner office of your namesake Stump
Towers. You're playing
blackjack online at in-my-dreams-casino.com and are on a streak, playing on one
of their
high limit tables.
With the
casino on its knees you've just upped your next bet to $2,500. You are
dealt 8 8
against the dealer's 5 .
Consistent with basic strategy you split your eights and match your original
stake with an additional $2,500 on the split hand.
Playing your first split hand you draw a 2
for a total of 10. Against the dealer's 5
a hand of 10 is just begging to be doubled down right? So you go ahead and
take the double and hit a 7 .
Damn! A picture card would have been nice, but no matter, you sit on 17 and
turn to your next hand.
Playing hand number two you hit a 3
for a total of 11. Time to double down again. The hit card...sh!t.
Another 7, only this time it's a 7
for a total of 18 which you have no real choice but to sit on.
Live casino or RNG casino?
So there you are with two hands - 17 and 18. Solid against the dealer's 5
but
still very beatable...and a rather large $10,000 staked on the table. Woops,
didn't mean to be betting quite so aggressively.
All of a sudden you
become aware of your heart beating under your Armani blazer. Deep breaths,
dry mouth you reach for a water, wishing a scotch or something a
little stronger was handy to steel the nerves. Palms are sweaty, knees
weak, arms are heavy - all of a sudden that Eminem track playing in the
background becomes a little annoying so you turn it off.
Right now, with $10,000 on the line and waiting for dealer to draw their cards
would you prefer that the deal at in-my-dreams-casino.com was computer
generated, or a real deal, dealt by a real dealer using actual playing cards?
Clearly this is a rhetorical question so I'll answer it for you - give me the
real live dealer any day! This isn't to say that I don't trust RNG games
at most online casinos. They are tested to the nth degree and have proven
time and again to produce outcomes consistent with those dictated by game
theory. But in the face of logic and reason and despite the fact that you have
reviewed in-my-dreams-casino.com's payout rates as audited by Testical Systems
Testing Inc, if you are playing a computer generated game and the dealer hits 5 , Q
for a 20, I challenge you not to wonder whether you have been cheated.
The moral of the story
Now if in-my-dreams-casino.com is a live casino, and the actual dealer draws the
real cards 5 , Q
you're still going to be upset. You might even storm out of your office
and fire someone. But you are unlikely to believe that you have been
duped. And here's the crucial point to this story - in the moment
when you're waiting for the dealer's cards to be dealt; at that moment when
adrenalin is coursing through your veins in anticipation of winning $10,000 or
losing $10,000, would you prefer to feel excitement, or suspicion fueled
trepidation?
Note: All names used in the above story are fictitious and any
similarity to actual persons or corporations is purely coincidental.
