8 Good, 4 Bad

A few months ago we wrote a post about how auspicious the number 8 is in Chinese culture.

The more eight’s the better seems to be the mantra of the true believers and it doesn’t matter where you can get them.  On your car registration plate, in your phone number, in your address, in the purchase price of anything…you get the idea.

And as much as you want 8’s…you definitely do not want 4’s.  No 4 is a good 4.  Even when it’s on a winners cheque being given to you.

This is precisely the dilemma that faced an online casino player from China (Mr C) who recently hit a progressive jackpot and won £4,444.

Mr C. hit the jackpot playing the WowPot  progressive slot game at Jackpot City and his initial joy turned to concern when he realized the exact figure on the winners cheque.

Casino spokesperson Terry Maverick explained the unusual issue in a press release issued over the weekend.

“The player contacted our customer services department, quite concerned about the winning amount. He was obviously keen not to lose out on the money, but at the same time wary of bringing bad luck on himself or his family. It is a first for us…we’re still talking to the player and working out the best approach to handle this.”

Here’s our suggested solution.  Tear up the GBP cheque and convert the £4,444 to Singapore dollars (SGD 9,150), send a few bucks the way of a worthy charity and the remaining SGD 8,888 to Mr C on one of those over-sized novelty cheques and everyone’s a winner!
