GVC & Ladbrokes Coral takeover talks

GVC Holdings, owners of Bwin and Party Casino (among other well known brands) have reportedly been in takeover talks with the recently merged Ladbrokes Coral group.

No deal at this stage, with discussions apparently breaking down. The figure said to have been offered (by GVC) was £3.6 billion.

This looks to be very much back on now.

In a stock exchange announcement today Ladbrokes confirmed it is in

detailed discussions regarding the possible combination of the two business

with a figure of up to £3.9 billion reported, depending on the UK government's review of gaming terminals.

There's no real reasoning to this but Ladbrokes and GVC Holdings brands feel a natural fit at Evolution. Gala & Coral seem more suited to Playtech.

In the short term I would expect Ladbrokes/Coral/Gala to stay with Playtech, in part because of the Ladbrokes shares Playtech bought into and the whole 5 year growth arrangement.

I get the impression GVC Holdings are pretty happy at Evolution, so I see no reason for them to switch their brands to Playtech. It's possible, if anything they might also offer Playtech common tables (as with Will Hill).

In the longer term I can see Ladbrokes returning to Evolution under a shared set of tables (Clubhouse or whatever), especially when GVC Holdings see how relatively quiet Ladbrokes tables are at Playtech.

For a while I wondered how long it would be before Gala casino had a 'shakeup'. This has to be more likely if the deal goes ahead, with at the very least Gala's private tables closing.

Agreed. Big private area investment cements this

This wouldn't have anything to do with Coral tables being your favourite looking Ptech tables would it?

Good point. Forgot all about that.

GVC Holdings takeover deal to buy Ladbrokes Coral has been reached for a figure of up to £4 billion.

With annual savings of £100m anticipated.

Ladbrokes Coral chairman John Kelly said:

“We have a leading multi-channel offer that utilises our retail and on-line businesses and offers us a promising future."
“The acquisition has compelling strategic rationale allied to an opportunity to use the best of both from proven management teams and will create material shareholder value. It secures earlier delivery of our long-term value potential, which is why the board of Ladbrokes Coral has unanimously recommended GVC's offer."

That "earlier delivery of long term value potential" could it in anyway be read as the Playtech 5 year online growth arrangement wasn't yielding results quick enough?

As of the beginning of December Playtech's holding in Ladbrokes was 6.67% and shares were at roughly the same level as when Playtech first acquired them back in 2013.

Latest news is the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is to investigate the proposed acquisition.

The CMA said that it will look at whether the merger will lead to a “substantial lessening of competition” in the UK gambling market.

GVC Holdings existing brands also inc. Sportingbet & Foxy Bing.

So if it goes ahead, do we see:

    ???
Further to what has already been said above, is the latest signals coming from GVC Holdings.

Having just posted strong online results for the year 2017 GVC Holdings management has said following the expansion phase that included the imminent acquisition of the Ladbrokes Coral group it was probably a good time for the company to consolidate its assets.

Chief executive Kenneth Alexander told the Reuters news agency.

We bought Ladbrokes Coral and we are done for the UK. Ladbrokes is what we wanted, we got them and we are biggest in the UK when the deal closes so we don’t need anything more here.
He also went on to say that didn't mean they wouldn't consider other market acquisitions though.

    So,

does this cast more doubt on the long term prospects for Gala or Coral .....perhaps unloading to some extent would also satisfy the CMA investigation.

& does this consolidation increase at all the likelihood of Ladbrokes' live casino returning to Evolution??

    Wouldn't be against it

..... I never had any problems with Ladbrokes until they switched live games from Evolution to Playtech and the recurring barrage of pop-ups that ensued .
