Understanding William Hill Online

The iconic William Hill brand

That William Hill has a live casino is pretty obvious.  After all, we’ve listed them on this site.  The links on this site to their casino take you to the address williamhillcasino.com – the site of William Hill Casino Club.  This is their online casino website.

Simple enough right?

Well it is until you stumble across williamhill.com.  This is obviously the company’s original domain, and the home of their extensive online sports betting services.  But browse the site a little further and you find a casino page…and not the williamhillcasino.com page – another one!

In fact, the williamhill.com domain has the sub-domains at casino.williamhill.com and vegas.williamhill.com and the vegas sub domain has a live casino that is powered by Evolution Gaming – very different to the one you’ll find at William Hill Casino Club which is from Playtech!

Confused?  I was for some time.  Is one of these sites an imposter?  A scam?

The answer’s no.  But the two different sites and live casinos warrant explanation.

The first point to note is that they are both owned and operated by WHG (International) Limited and WHG Trading  Limited which are both William Hill Plc subsidiaries.  They are also both both licensed in Gibraltar.  So effectively, behind the different looking websites and different web addresses are the same people running the back office.

But why 2 live casinos?  Well I guess the obvious point to be made is that William Hill is a big operation, estimated to have a 4.5% slice of the European online gambling market – ranking them in the top 3 by market share.  If any operator can afford 2 different live gaming platforms and its this mob.  Although this may not have been intentional.

Back in late 2008, the structure of William Hill’s online business changed quite dramatically when they entered into a joint venture with software developer Playtech, who took a 29% share in William Hill Online – the JV vehicle.  With Playtech onboard, it made sense to leverage their software for the casinos operations, regardless of incumbent licensees – hence some double up in offerings.
