Macau: hospital beds versus gaming tables

It’s no revelation that casinos are a dominant part of the culture and ethos of Macau. Just how dominant was highlighted by the Reuters this week when they reported that the former Portuguese colony, the most densely populated territory on earth with half a million residents and 28 million tourists annually, has only one public hospital! And it ain’t big either.

Macau’s one and only public hospital is the Conde S. Januário. A modest little facility established in 1874 and extended in 1989, that contains only 476 beds. That’s 1 bed for every 12 gaming tables in the territory!

Priorities a little out of balance?

Lets just say that if you’re in Macau you’re far better off having a pressing need to gamble than a pressing need to get medical attention!
