Dijkhoff pushing for new Netherlands net gambling regulations

nethlandsonlingamblingIn July last year the Dutch Remote Gambling Bill was presented to the House of Representatives.

If and when passed, the Bill will allow online gambling operators based/licensed in European Union or European Economic Area countries to apply for a license to offer and market their services in the Netherlands, paying a 20% gaming tax rate.

Last month the Bill’s architect and protagonist (former) State Secretary for Security and Justice Fred Teeven was forced out of the role for misleading Parliament over an unrelated matter leaving the future of the Bill up in the air.

Yesterday, Teeven’s successor Klass Dijkhoff announced his support for the Bill and his commitment to push for regulated online gambling in a letter to the House of Representatives.

According to Dijkhoff, five year licenses to offer online sports betting and casino games will be up for grabs once the law is passed, with no limit on the number of licensees potentially accepted.

He has also said that operators that have been actively serving Dutch customers before the new regime comes into effect will not be banned from applying for or receiving a license. This is despite the Netherlands Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) saying that operators refusing to stop marketing their services to Dutch players before the new regulations take effect will be ineligible for a license.

At this stage there is no clear timeline on when the law will be passed or when licenses may be awarded. Despite this, more than 200 operators have expressed their interest with Kansspelautoriteit in applying.
