Marina Bay Sands Official Grand Opening

No, this isn’t a terribly out of date post.  The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore did celebrate its official grand opening last week, despite the fact that the casino has been well and truly pumping for almost a year now.

Thing is, the entire project was such an expansive development that while parts of it launched early last year, the final stage, the lotus shaped Art Science Museum, only opened its doors just last week.

The Museum completes the picture of a truly diverse entertainment complex including a 2000+ room hotel, dozen or so restaurants, shopping mall, expansive convention space, 7 acre Skypark complete with its 55th floor infinity pool and of course the casino that has already established itself as one of the most successful in the world.

Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson was keen to point out at the opening that Marina Bay wasn’t just a casino, saying, “our casino accounts for only less than 2% of our operations, so it is a very small part. Obviously we have so much more to offer.”

Less than 2% of operations? This must be measured by reference to relative floor space.  I’d be very surprised if the casino contributed only 2% of the operation’s revenue!

As for future expansion plans, Adelson is keen to keep on growing, saying, “We need all the land we can get. We are burdened by our success.”
