Professor I Nelson Rose comments on Black Friday

Understandably, the talk of the town at May’s iGaming North America conference was the DOJ’s Black Friday indictments and where they leave the US online gambling regulatory landscape.

Professor I. Nelson Rose (Whittier Law School, University of Macau, Consultant and expert witness to Government and Industry on Internet gambling legal issues) shares his thoughts in an interview with APCW’s  J Todd.

A couple of key quotes from the interview…

The Department of Justice stance…

the DOJ really is very unhappy about Internet gambling…they think it’s illegal and people are becoming millionaires and billionaires…

“the DOJ are waging a war of intimidation and trying to scare everyone…they want people to leave the field

On online gambling legality from a US player’s perspective…

“they’re not going after players….they can’t go after players…

“there is no federal crime of making illegal bets…

“half the states have ancient laws on the books that could conceivably apply to players but they would never use them against players…

On impact of hard line stance…

“if you get rid of the best known names, you get the sleazy operators…

On the possibility of future regulation…

“the states are desperate for money…can’t print money like the Feds…

“They want Caesars to have to bid couple of hundred million dollars for a (online) license in California…

“it’s going to happen…it’ll be on the state level…once California, New Jersey, Florida break though other states will follow…
