Online Gambling in Croatia
Croatia is not a country averse to gambling, with a land based casino industry that has grown considerably since the country achieved its independence in 1991. There are no fewer than 20 legal casinos now operating across the country including a number run by the state.
Authorities have long taken the approach to passively allow online gambling activity of residents, but in 2009 Finance minister Ivo Suker revealed government plans to officially sanction the industry with new regulations that would also raise tax revenues estimated to be up to 3 million Kuna annually.
As well as generating government revenue the new laws, introduced in early 2010, were considered to be a positive step towards European Union accession as they are consistent with the online gambling approach endorsed by the European Commission. That is, they allow EU based and licensed online gambling providers to offer their service to Croatian residents rather than seeking to protect local monopoly providers.
